Legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, who was undergoing treatment at a nursing home in Kolkata for a respiratory infection, passed away Friday morning. She was 82.
She had been undergoing treatment at the nursing home since December 23. While she did respond to treatment, the actress remained weak. Reports streamed in that though she was stable, Sen wasn't out of the woods.
On January 3, her condition deteriorated and she was supported by non-invasive ventilation. January 17, Friday morning, Sen suffered a massive heart attack.
The actress, dubbed as the Greta Garbo of Bengali cinema, is known for her stunning performances in films such as 'Deep Jwele Jaai' and 'Uttar Falguni' as well as Hindi movies 'Devdas', 'Bombai Ka Babu', 'Mamta' and 'Aandhi'.
She most notably won the best actress award for 'Saat Paake Bandha' at the Moscow Film Festival in 1963.
Post her retirement over three decades ago, she has stayed away from media attention.
Sen is survived by her daughter Moon Moon Sen and granddaughters Riya and Raima.
