Rahman, Oscar, Academy

Music composer Ismail Darbar is set to face the music for his comments that A R Rahman 'purchased' his Oscar for Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire.

According to reports, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which is responsible for the Oscar awards, is upset over Darbar’s comments and is planning to sue him.

The Academy’s director of communication Leslie Unger said, 'It simply is not possible to buy an Academy Award. While some individuals might disagree with the results of our voting processes, the Academy stands behind the integrity of the voting.'

Ismail accused Rahman of unofficially buying the Oscar awards as he did not deserve it. Accroding to Darbar, Rahman bagged two Oscars by bribing the Academy officials.

'I just don’t understand how the music for that movie won the prestigious award. What was Oscar-worthy about it? Nothing. I would have been happy had he won it for films like Roja or Bombay. He did not deserve it,' he reportedly added.
